WHEN BELLA WOKE up the next morning, she was a little confused and a lot disoriented. It took her a moment to realize that she wasn’t in her own bed, in her own house. Then, slowly, she remembered whose house she was in and where in that house she had fallen asleep. It was not her old childhood room, that was for sure.

Instead Bella woke up in the bed meant for Marco, sans the deputy himself.

Once that memory unblurred from sleep, Bella sat up like she been shocked again by that same lightning from the night before.

With a haze over her eyes, she quickly looked at the space next to her. That part of the bed was still made from the night before. There was no Marco there, above or below the sheets.

“He slept on the couch, by the way.” Bella yelped and turned toward the bedroom doorway. Val had a coffee cup in his hand and a smug look on his face. He nodded to the love seat at the end of the bed. “I caught him coming out earlier and he told me y’all had been talking about the case and you’d fallen asleep when he had to take a call. Even though your room is four steps that way.”

Val gave her a cheeky smile.

Bella rolled her eyes.

“Next time you get a crazy stalker trying to take you, then we’ll see how badly you want to sleep alone.”

Val’s smugness wiped away. Then it was the protective brother.

“I overheard Marco and his friend the deputy talking earlier,” he said. “Apparently they’re looking at a lot of different leads, which I think is good, but so far haven’t found anything new. They haven’t found him.”

That was and wasn’t what Bella had wanted to hear. The idea of someone practicing for her abduction had added a new layer of fear. It was why she’d asked Marco if she could stay in the room while he mulled over some things and took a quick call from Deputy Park. The masked man had managed to make the one place in all the world where she felt the safest into somewhere she was now afraid to be alone.

She hated it.

Just like she hated that the man hadn’t been caught despite being impulsive.

“Where is he now? Marco, I mean.”

“Downstairs on the phone the last I saw. I think he’s talking to his sister. Or at least someone he’s very comfortable rolling his eyes at.” Val gave her a knowing look. “I know personally I’m very comfortable with showing my sister just how much she annoys me. Which is quite frequent.”

Bella grabbed the pillow next to her and threw it at the door. Val dodged it, laughing, and left.

By the time she got ready and made it downstairs, her family and Marco were together in the dining room, talking. Her mother squeezed her shoulder, her very own form of good-morning, and handed her a cup of coffee. Bella took a seat next to Marco, who remained in conversation with her father.
